The Hirschfeld Bar lies in the lower foyer of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), recently refurbished and yet preserving its historical charm. It commemorates the Jewish doctor and pioneer of the homosexual movement Magnus Hirschfeld, whose Institute for Sexology was founded in 1919 in the immediate vicinity of today’s HKW. The world’s first sexual research facility was looted in 1933 in the course of the Nazi book burns and subsequently closed for good. Today, next to the spacious bar, there is a stage and an open light front to the garden – a perfect place to listen and celebrate.
